I.O.I is officially back, turning one of K-pop’s most nostalgic reunion stories into a full comeback. On May 19, the project girl group released its third mini album, “I.O.I : LOOP,” marking a major return nearly nine years after the group wrapped its original activities in 2017.
The comeback carries special meaning because it arrives as part of I.O.I’s 10th anniversary project. The group first debuted in 2016 through Mnet’s survival program “Produce 101” and quickly became one of the defining project groups of its generation. Although I.O.I’s original promotion period was short, songs such as “Very Very Very” and “Downpour” left a lasting mark on fans, making this reunion one of the most anticipated anniversary comebacks of 2026.

This comeback is being carried out by nine members: Im Na-young, Chungha, Kim Se-jeong, Jung Chae-yeon, Kim So-hye, Yoo Yeon-jung, Choi Yoo-jung, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon Somi. Kang Mi-na and Zhou Jieqiong are not participating due to prior commitments, but the return still brings together a large part of the group’s original lineup and gives longtime fans a rare chance to see I.O.I active again under one name.
“I.O.I : LOOP” includes six tracks, with “Suddenly” serving as the title track. The title song has been introduced as a synth-pop track that captures the wave of longing that can arrive without warning in the middle of everyday life. The album title “LOOP” also fits the group’s story: meeting, parting and meeting again. For I.O.I, the word feels less like a simple concept and more like a reflection of the group’s unusual path through K-pop history.
Ahead of the album release, I.O.I built anticipation through a pre-release track, comeback teasers, concept photos and audio snippets. The rollout emphasized both memory and growth, showing the members with a more mature mood while still preserving the emotional warmth that made the group beloved during its original run. The teasers suggested that the comeback would not simply lean on nostalgia, but would reinterpret I.O.I’s identity through a more polished 2026 lens.

The reunion will also continue beyond the album. Following the release of “I.O.I : LOOP,” the group is scheduled to begin the “2026 I.O.I Concert Tour: LOOP” with three shows at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul from May 29 to 31. The tour is expected to extend to other Asian cities, giving global fans another way to experience the anniversary project in person.
For K-pop audiences, I.O.I’s comeback is more than a standard release. It reconnects the current industry with one of the most important survival-show groups of the previous decade. Many of the members have since built careers as soloists, actors and entertainers, so seeing them return as I.O.I gives the project a strong emotional hook. It also reminds fans how much the group influenced the format and legacy of project girl groups that followed.
With “I.O.I : LOOP,” the group is closing a long gap while opening a new chapter. The comeback does not erase the years apart; instead, it uses that distance as part of the story. That makes the release a powerful anniversary moment built on memory, growth and the rare feeling of a group finding its way back to fans after nearly a decade.
